February is probably best known by the day that falls smack-bang in the middle of this 28-day month – Valentine’s Day. Here at Sugar & Vice we love love as much as the next starry-eyed couple, but we don’t care for the consumerism that tends to override the real meaning of this day. Overpriced flowers, cheesy soft toys and overcrowded restaurant, err, no thanks.
Valentine’s Day is about showing your partner love and appreciation, and spoiling them with a simple surprise. And there are plenty of ways to do that. Here are some of our favourite ideas:
1.) Keep it simple and head to the beach (or park) after work, grab an ice cream and simply take a stroll. It’s about chatting and just enjoying each other’s company in a serene and beautiful setting.
2.) Active and adventurous couples: Hike up Lion’s Head at sunset with a small picnic in your backpack. The sight of the sunset from the top is superb and one of Mother Nature’s most romantic gestures. Don’t forget to take a headlamp to light the way on your way down after dark.
3.) Whoever said romance is dead (or too expensive) never thought to grab a takeaway pizza and head to a beach like Clifton, Boulders or Glen Beach for a sunset picnic. For extra ambiance, take a few small-ish brown paper bags and tealight candles with you. Fill the bags with sand and put the candles inside. A beach picnic by candlelight… yes please!
4.) Sometimes the best kind of romance is just chilling together. But rather than chilling at home (where your attention is invariably divided), take a drive to Hout Bay Harbour, grab some fish and chips and simply enjoy the view, the vibe and being in the company of your person. (Also, this is a “cheap as chips” option.)
5.) Canapés and champagne go together like… a good couple! Have your own pairing experience at home by making surprise canapés for each other and pairing it with your favourite champagne. While preparing your dish, you can share with each other why you are grateful they are in your life.
And singletons, there is no need for you to feel left out on this day. These suggestions aren't only for the loved-up couples, but are great for a bunch of girlfriends to do together or for a groups of guys and gals.
